Doug & I went to Iceland on holiday in May 2018. We had five glorious days to get as remote as we could. We fell in love with the beautiful island and its craggy coasts, vivid green pastures, black sand beaches and crazy volatile weather. After that trip we vowed to get back to Iceland with the girls and/or to similar spots further afield.

There's Another Iceland?

Faroe Islands first popped onto our radar when our close NYC friends, Shannon & Greg, went and raved about it. Seemingly a smaller version of Iceland in many ways, Faroe Islands is a compilation of 18 small islands (17 of which are inhabited). It sits out on its own in the Atlantic Ocean, between Iceland and Scandinavia.

Detour Ahead

Originally we were going to go straight from Canada to Portugal to start the European leg of our travels. But I couldn’t get Faroe Islands out of my head. It wasn’t exactly on the way to Portugal, but then again, it wasn’t terribly out of the way either. This year, “on the way” is all relative. We have the luxury of time to take detours here & there. Only 9 hours in, and happy to report that Faroe Islands has been WELL worth the detour!!

Faroe's landscape is drop-dead gorgeous. Its one stunning view after another with wild sheep & birds in all directions. Fair to say that things in Faroe look a lot different than our homeland New York City :)

Magical

But more than that, Faroe *feels* different. It’s the first time since we left NYC on June 30, 2019 that it’s been just the four of us. Up until now (4 weeks & counting), we’ve been with friends & family around the clock, which has been such a treat. That said, though, there’s something uniquely magical about it being just the four of us now, exploring a place that’s completely new to all of us.
